The Haute Route is the ultimate ski tour. The classic route starts in Chamonix with a tour of the Vallee Blanche, then moving on through the Alps staying in mountain huts for 5 nights on your way through Verbier and on to Zermatt. The technical difficulties are minimal, though some crampon and ice axe work, steep skinning an variable conditions will be encountered.
The hut system in Europe allows for easy mountain travel without the burden of carrying food, sleeping bags and cook stoves. A light daypack with clothing and water is all that is needed! Arriving at the hut mid-afternoon, hot meals, beer, wine and bottled water await. Comfortable beds and quilted duvets allow for a good night’s sleep with coffee and breakfast ready before the morning’s departure.
As an eight day tour, the Haute Route takes a certain amount of stamina. Each day consists of about 1500m of vertical skiing over 6-8 hours. A high mountain itinerary, you should expect to encounter glaciers, crevasses, icy slopes, weather, avalanches, rock fall and other potential hazards. Avalanche and crevasse rescue equipment will be carried by each member of the party and the rope will be utilized in some sections as necessary.
